Air Freight Services to the UK
UK Air Cargo Solutions: Speed, Security, and Compliance
For high-value or time-critical inventory, air freight is the only viable option. Shipping International connects your business to the UK’s primary cargo hubs. We operate daily consolidations and direct services into London Heathrow (LHR), Manchester (MAN), and East Midlands (EMA).
We do not just book the flight. We manage the pre-export compliance, the airline handling, and the complex UK customs entry via the Customs Declaration Service (CDS). Our team controls the movement from the moment it leaves the factory floor to the final mile delivery.
Service Levels: Balancing Speed and Cost
Air freight costs vary significantly based on urgency. We offer three distinct service levels to match your budget and deadline.
Consolidated Air Freight (Standard)
We combine your cargo with other shipments on a scheduled flight. This shares the cost of the Master Air Waybill (MAWB). It is the most economical way to ship by air.
- Transit Time: 3–7 days (Door-to-Door).
- Best for: Regular stock replenishment and planned inventory.
Back-to-Back (Express)
Your cargo travels on a dedicated House Air Waybill (HAWB) on the next available flight. We prioritise your shipment for immediate uplift.
- Transit Time: 1–3 days.
- Best for: Urgent orders and JIT (Just-in-Time) manufacturing components.
Air Charter (Critical)
When commercial schedules don't work, we charter the aircraft. From a small Cessna for urgent documents to a Boeing 747F for heavy machinery, you control the schedule. This is often used for AOG (Aircraft on Ground) parts or for line stoppage situations.
Key UK Entry Hubs
Selecting the right airport reduces inland haulage costs.
- London Heathrow (LHR): The UK’s primary hub. It handles the vast majority of belly-hold cargo on passenger flights. Ideal for deliveries to London and the South.
- Manchester (MAN): The gateway for the North. Using Manchester avoids the congestion of the M25 and reduces delivery times to Leeds, Liverpool, and Scotland.
- East Midlands (EMA): The UK’s dedicated freighter hub. It operates 24/7 and specialises in pure cargo aircraft, handling larger and heavier freight than passenger hubs.
For onward transport from these hubs, we utilise our road freight network to deliver fast.
Documentation and Compliance
Air freight moves fast, so your paperwork must be perfect. Errors cause delays that negate the speed advantage of flying.
Required Documents
- Commercial Invoice: Must state the Incoterms (e.g., FCA Shanghai) and HS Codes.
- Packing List: Must detail the net and gross weight.
- Air Waybill (AWB): The contract of carriage. We issue this once the cargo is handed over to the airline.
Incoterms: FCA vs. EXW
We recommend buying on FCA (Free Carrier) terms rather than EXW (Ex Works). Under FCA, your supplier handles the export customs clearance in their country. Under EXW, you are responsible for export licenses and customs abroad, which adds risk and complexity.
Customs Clearance (CDS)
We submit entries via the Customs Declaration Service (CDS). For air freight, we often use ETSF (External Temporary Storage Facilities). This allows us to move goods away from the congested airport ramp to a bonded warehouse for clearance, speeding up the release.
Learn more about our support on our customs clearance page.
Specialised Cargo Handling
Standard general cargo is simple. We also handle the complex freight.
Temperature Controlled (Pharma & Perishables)
We manage shipments requiring -20°C, 2-8°C, or 15-25°C ranges. We use Envirotainers and thermal blankets to protect goods on the tarmac and in the hold. We coordinate with Border Control Posts (BCP) for health inspections upon arrival.
Dangerous Goods (DG)
Air transport has stricter safety rules than sea freight. We check your MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) and DGN (Dangerous Goods Note) to ensure compliance with IATA regulations. Whether it is lithium batteries or chemicals, we ensure the packaging and labelling meet airline standards.
Cost Drivers: Volumetric Weight
Air freight is charged on "Chargeable Weight." This is the higher of the actual weight or the volumetric weight.
The Rule: 1 CBM = 167 kg.
If you ship a large box of feathers, you pay for the volume. If you ship a small box of lead, you pay for the weight. We include this in every quote to ensure transparency. For heavy, low-value items, you might consider our sea freight services as a cost-effective alternative.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate chargeable weight for air freight?
The industry-standard formula is Length × Width × Height (in cm) divided by 6000. This gives the volumetric weight in kilograms. If this figure exceeds the actual scale weight, the airline charges based on the volumetric weight.
What is an ETSF?
ETSF stands for External Temporary Storage Facility. It is a bonded warehouse near the airport (like Heathrow), where we can move goods immediately upon landing. This avoids congestion at the airline sheds and allows us to clear customs faster.
Can you handle "Known Consignor" cargo?
Yes. If you are a registered Known Consignor, your goods can bypass certain security screening delays. If not, we arrange x-ray screening (primary screening) before the cargo is loaded onto the aircraft.
What are the maximum dimensions for air freight?
Passenger aircraft (PAX) have a maximum height limit of approximately 160cm per piece. Freighter aircraft (CAO - Cargo Aircraft Only) can accept much taller and wider items. We select the aircraft type based on your packing list.
Do I need a Deferment Account for import taxes?
Not necessarily. You can use our Deferment Account to pay Import Duty (subject to a fee). For Import VAT, we recommend using Postponed VAT Accounting (PVA) to account for it on your VAT return, which aids cash flow.
How fast is shipping from China to the UK by air?
A direct flight takes roughly 10-12 hours. However, the door-to-door process typically takes 3 to 5 days, allowing for export clearance in China, flight handling, and import clearance in the UK.
