Sea Freight Services to the UK

Import Sea Freight Solutions for UK Businesses

Efficient sea freight is about more than just the ocean crossing; it requires seamless integration with UK port operations and inland haulage. We manage imports through the UK's primary gateways, including Felixstowe, Southampton, London Gateway, and Liverpool. By selecting the port closest to your final delivery point, we reduce road miles and cut haulage costs.

Shipping International provides a complete "quayside-to-kerbside" service. We handle carrier booking, documentation, customs entry, and final truck delivery. This integrated approach removes the friction from your supply chain.

Container Shipping Options: FCL and LCL

We tailor our service to your volume. We analyse your shipment data to recommend the most cost-effective load method.

Full Container Load (FCL)

For larger shipments, FCL offers security and speed. You pay for the exclusive use of the container. We secure slot space on major alliances to guarantee capacity even during peak seasons.

  • Standard Equipment: 20ft and 40ft General Purpose containers for boxed goods.
  • High Cube: 40ft and 45ft High Cube units for voluminous cargo.
  • Carrier Options: We balance transit time against cost, offering both direct sailings for speed and transhipment options for budget-conscious freight.

Less-than-Container Load (LCL)

If you do not have enough cargo to fill a box, do not pay for air. Our LCL consolidation services allow you to share container space with other importers. You pay only for the volume (CBM) you use. We run regular weekly consolidations from major manufacturing hubs in China, India, and the USA to UK bonded warehouses.

Specialised Equipment and Project Cargo

Not all cargo fits in a standard box. We provide technical shipping solutions for complex freight.

Reefer Logistics

We transport perishable goods, pharmaceuticals, and chemical products requiring strict temperature control. Our reefer services maintain the cold chain from origin to the UK delivery point, utilising genset trailers for the road leg to ensure zero temperature deviation.

Out of Gauge (OOG) and Flat Racks

For industrial machinery that exceeds standard dimensions, we use Open Top and Flat Rack containers. Our team manages the technical lashing and securing, ensuring the cargo meets the requirements of UK ports and the road freight regulations for onward delivery.

Dangerous Goods (DG)

Shipping hazardous materials requires strict adherence to the IMDG Code. We review all Dangerous Goods Notes (DGNs) and MSDS documents prior to shipping to prevent rejections at the port. We ensure that the receiving UK port and haulier are licensed to handle your specific class of dangerous goods.

The UK Import Process: Documentation and Customs

Compliance is the key to speed. We ensure your paperwork is ready before the ship docks.

Customs Clearance (CDS)

We submit import declarations via the Customs Declaration Service (CDS). We link this to the port inventory systems (Destin8 or CNS) to secure release. We can help you utilise Postponed VAT Accounting (PVA) to improve your cash flow by accounting for import VAT on your return rather than paying it at the border.

For more details on compliance, visit our customs clearance services page.

Bill of Lading Management

We manage the release of the Bill of Lading. Whether you use Original Bills or Telex Release, we coordinate with the shipping line to ensure the "Commercial Release" is granted immediately upon vessel arrival, avoiding quay rent and demurrage charges.

Why Choose Shipping International for UK Imports?

  • Port Neutrality: We are not tied to one port. We route your cargo to the most efficient entry point for your warehouse location.
  • Demurrage Management: We track free-time expiry dates to ensure containers are returned to the line before detention charges apply.
  • Global Network: Our agents at origin (Asia, Americas, Europe) control the booking and loading process, giving you visibility from the start.
  • Inland Haulage Power: We have access to a vast fleet of skeletal trailers and sidelifters to handle the final delivery, even during driver shortages.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does sea freight take to the UK?

Transit times depend on the origin. Shipments from China (Main Ports) to the UK typically take 28 to 35 days. Shipments from the US East Coast take 12 to 15 days. We provide a specific schedule based on the selected carrier and service loop.

What is the difference between Demurrage and Detention?

Demurrage is the charge applied when the full container remains in the port terminal beyond the agreed free time. Detention is the charge applied when you hold the container outside the port (e.g., at your warehouse) for too long. We manage the haulage to help you avoid these costs.

Do I need an EORI number to import to the UK?

Yes. Any business importing goods into the UK must have an EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) number starting with "GB". You cannot clear customs without one.

Can you handle the haulage from the port?

Yes. We arrange "merchant haulage" from all major UK ports (Felixstowe, Southampton, London Gateway, Liverpool, Grangemouth). We deliver the container to your premises for unloading and return the empty box to the quay.

How is import duty calculated?

Import duty is calculated based on the Commodity Code (HS Code) of your goods and their value (Cost of goods + Freight + Insurance). We can help you classify your goods correctly to determine the applicable duty rate.
